Practical Grade Testing and Requirements for First Level Certification Program
Practical Grade One (PG-1) (100 Credits) requires:
Attendance of D-101 (first week) and D-201 (second week) series courses
Attendance of A-150 (optional at this level, but necessary for Certification.)
Ability to float buccal and lingual cusps and provide practical advice regarding wolf teeth and cap extraction
Ability to identify incisor problems and requirements for incisor realignment
Ability to identify ramps, "ATR", anterior/posterior locking problems, hooks, high or protuberant teeth, waves, decay and periodontal problems and show knowledge of occlusion / excursion dimensions
Practical Grade Two (PG-2) (100 credits) requires completion of Grade One and:
Attendance of D-102 (first week) and D-202 (second week) series courses
Ability to correct all dental problems identified above
Demonstration of ability to create proper bit seats
Provide evidence of Association membership
Practical Grade Three (PG-3) (100 credits) Certified Equine Dentist requires completion of Grades One and Two and A-150 (24 credits) and:
Letter of Intent to Certify with a deposit fee of $150.00 - Must be in office PRIOR to Class
Letter of Assessment of Competence signed by an Academy Certified Equine Dental Practitioner in good standing stating he/she believes you are ready to attempt certification Must be in office PRIOR to Class
Spend ten days working with a Certified Equine Dental Practitioner - does not have to be undertaken in one block.
Alternative: 100 hours through a combination of the following:
1. Working with a Certified Dentist
2. Attending a Field Trip
3. Attending PG-3 level continued education
Hours count toward first level certification only!
Acceptance letter from school granting permission to certify at a given class
Attendance of D-103 (first week) and D-203 (second week) series courses PG-3 (100 credits)
Completion of A-150 or A-100 Anatomy courses (A-150 required and can be taken at any level.)
Ability to provide practical advice regarding extraction of molars in the aged horse (20 years plus)
Demonstration of correct use of modern power equipment
Signed letter of competence and good practice from two Veterinarians
Minimum of 25 documented case histories of incisor realignment - copies only - Post PG-2 level dental courses - including names, addresses and phone numbers - in ADDITION to the following!
Minimum of 100 documented case histories copies only - Post PG-2 level dental courses - including names, addresses and phone numbers - in ADDITION to the above!
Satisfactory completion of the written and practical examination
Evidence of membership in an Equine Dental Association. PG-3 level cost in our Association is $150.00 per year, which includes a quarterly subscription to the Horse Dentistry and Bitting Journal. In addition, your name, address and phone number will be listed in the Journal under Academy Certified Equine Oral Health Practitioners
At least one year between first attendance at the Academy and time of certification.
Required certification documents are to be in the Academy office on or before first day of class!
Please Note: If you provide proof of membership in another association, you can still receive the Horse Dentistry and Bitting Journal by joining at the individual membership level for $35.00 US, Canada-$45.00,
and foreign $55.00. However, you will not be included in the Association s AD in the Horse Dentistry & Bitting Journal.
Practical Grade Testing and Requirements for Advanced Certification Program
Practical Grade Four (PG-4) "Advanced Certified Equine Dentist" (200 credits) requires:
Must be a Certified Equine Dentist, having earned a total of 324 credits
Must accumulate 200 credit hours of Advanced continuing education, of which 50 may be earned through a Field Trip or Special Project, for a total of 524 credits
Provide practical advice regarding extraction of molars in horses less than twenty years of age
Provide evidence of continued Association Membership
Write a 5000 word thesis with supporting evidence, subject to be approved by the Academy
Provide 50 documented cases of advanced dentistry with names, addresses and phone numbers, post PG-3 certification.
Must be sponsored by an Academy Advanced Equine Dentist and a review of all credentials, history and past performance.
Must pass a written and practical examination
Exemptions to Advanced Certification Process
Equine Dentists who have in excess of 1000 credits from the former Nebraska school could test immediately at the Advanced level provided they meet the requirements of prior levels exempting credits.
Those wishing to test must attend the last week assessment for D-300 certification.
Non-veterinarians applying for this exemption must have completed one Academy A-150 anatomy class or the equivalent.
Those outside the school program practicing equine dentistry can enter the requirements of prior levels of certification exempting credits.
Those providing a letter of intent to certify must receive approval of acceptance into this program by the Board of Directors.
Practical Grade Testing for Master Certification Program
Practical Grade Five (PG-5) "Master Certified Equine Dentist" (540 credits including A-100) requires:
Must be an Academy Advanced Certified Equine Dentist, having earned 524 credits
Must have completed A-100 five-day full body Equine Anatomy class (40 credits)
Must earn a minimum of 250 credits of Academy course theory and 250 credits of Academy supervised practical work (500 credits), for a total of 1,064 credits
Must teach at 10 or more D-100, D-200 or D-300 dental courses
Must be sponsored by an Academy Master Equine Dentist and a review made of all credentials, history and past performance.
Must be approved by a committee of three Master Dentists, by a two-thirds vote.
Must pass a written exam and practical test on one to three horses.
Maintenance of Academy Certification Titles at any level:
a. Must complete a 50-hour block of continuing education every 18 months
b. Must belong to an equine dental association
PLEASE NOTE: Every 18 month period Academy certified dentists are required to have 50 hours of continuing education that has been approved by the Board.
Every other 18-month period, in other words, every 36 months, Academy certified dentists must attend the Academy of Equine Dentistry to fulfill this CE requirement.
